The NUJ Dundee Branch

Comrade Jim Innes 1947 - 2016 R.I.P

Scottish Journalism and Labour Politics will never be the same again after the passing of our Friend and Comrade Jim.

He was a member of our Union for over 40 years having joined in March 1974. He was granted a Life Membership in 2014. Laterly he served the local branch as treasurer for the last three years.

As a Labour Party P.R. man and Activist, Jim was respected throughout the length and breadth of the United Kingdom.  Jim was a man of the people, a true Socialist, described by Adam Boulton as ''One of the best Press Officers and Human Beings he had ever encountered.” Bernard Ponsonby of STV described Jim as ''A Labour Loyalist who detested Prima Donnas and those with a bent for self indulgence.”  What better attributes could a man receive.

Jim was Founder of the West Highland Free Press, Head of News at Radio Tay, and also hosted the ''Tay Talk In'' in the late Eighties.  He was also based at Radio Forth for a time.  During his working life, he was an adviser to Northern Ireland Secretary, Mo Mowlem, as well as several other high profile M.Ps and politicians. A sage to many.

So many Tributes have poured into the Branch, it would be impossible to relate all of them, however it is my pleasure to say that they have come from, London, Stornoway, Glasgow, Manchester, and many other places beside.  Jim was remembered by all for his wry sense of humour, and always being ready with a story or two.

I will sorely miss his company as a Friend, colleague, and close confidant, as I'm sure will all who had the pleasure of meeting him or working with him.

I once heard Gloria Hunniford say ''Our departed friends will never be gone, as long their names are on the lips of the living''. I'm sure Jim's name will live on for many years to come.

With Deepest Respect
Jim Symons
